| Hello Haramara friends!
This is the first blog from Haramara. Out of respect for our hosts on this land, the Huichols, I feel it is proper to begin with some information on this amazing indigenous people. The Huichols, who have blessed Haramara, are presently not more than 20-30,000 in number. They now represent a remarkable exception to the rule of Hispanicization, race-mixture and cultural integration which mark most other ethnic groups in Mexico. They survived the Spanish domination and have been able to keep to the present day an exceptional racial, linguistical, religious, social and cultural unity. Located mainly in the remote and not easily accessible mountains of Northwestern Mexico, where many Huichol communities still live within the shamanistic framework of their unique beliefs and life-style, the Huichols are still a challenge for modern anthropology. Little is known about their remote past, but the fact is that they belong to the least changed indigenous communities across the centuries of the whole American continent. |
